Moana (2026)
So, we watched the new "Moana" movie on Disney plus. Catherine Laga'aia does a good job portraying the lead, Moana. She is the heroine, she is brave, and she must do what's best for her island because she is the chief's daughter. She is next in line to rule (although, I'm thinking her mom might be chief before her?). Just like the first Moana movie (animated) Moana has the greatest relationship to her grandmother, the local crazy woman, Grandma Tala, played by Rena Owen. She does crazy really well! And she's a beautiful Manta Ray later in the movie. My favorite character in the movie is actually the ocean. The ocean is clever. The Ocean knows what's going on and doesn't have to say a word. And the ocean saves people and chickens from dying. Speaking of Chickens, Hei Hei is in the movie as comic relief. I'm very surprised no one cooked him. But there wasn't a lot of Pua in the movie. Pua didn't make the journey. Pua stayed home. Chief Tui, played by John Tui (I see what they did there), is a very fun leader. He isn't cruel. He just wants the best for his people. And he is all about traditions. Then we have, of course, The Rock, Dwyane Johnson. This man never ages. Maui. Now, really, his song "You're Welcome" was better animated. It just was. But he didn't do a bad job here. The wig makes me laugh but it works for his character. His character is a trickster, but Moana needs to get him to know he has to be the hero. He must take the heart back to Te Fiti and make things right. You stole it, you return it. But there are so many things in the way, like the Kamamora. Crazy fast things that want to kill everything. Overall this movie wasn't bad. Disney did a good job especially with the animation on Maui's body and with Grandma Tala. It's worth a second watch.
