Mamma Mia!

I already knew a lot of the songs in this movie, but this was my first time actually seeing it. So, Meryl Streep's character, Donna, loved three men the same summer she got pregnant. So who's the father? And Sophie wants her father there. But is it Pierce Brosnan, Stellan Skarsgard or Colin Firth? All are really good actors and I had no idea Pierce could sing. This story is a whirlwind for Donna as well as Sophie, even to the point where she gets into an argument with her groom, Sky. Definitely a lot of fun with the two bridesmaids and the two friends of Donna's, who I didn't realize were Christine Baranski and Molly Weasley herself, Julie Walters! Over all this was a fun show and a lot of "whoops" to be sure!

Cyrano

I've wanted to see this movie for a while. I'm glad Amazon Prime had it available on a rainy Friday night to watch. My husband loves the story itself and has in the past. So he was quite delighted to see this, and, of course, he sat up straight with the sword fighting. For me, the actors were just lovely! And I totally missed that it was a musical until Haley Bennett, who played Roxanne, started singing in the carriage. And I love musicals. Everyone's voice was just lovely, just totally in tune with the music, except for Peter Dinklage. I really enjoy him as an actor. He takes good pride in his characters and it shows, but the voice? He's deep, he's a bass, but either it was the music that was written for him or his voice in general. It didn't do it for me. I'd rather see him act than hear him sing. I see that Hollywood threw in the stereotypical black man as the lead, just to keep the audience happy. And Kelvin Harrison Jr. did a wonderful job as Christian

The Super Mario Bros. Movie

This was a totally cute movie! I don't think I've ever played the video games before in my youth, but the two brothers, the princess and even the evil Bowser was just really cool! The brothers have a special bond with each other: one is stronger than the other, but together, they can do anything! And the Princess just wants what's best for her people and to keep them protected. Even though she's a strong person in her own right, she works well in a team. And I like seeing more of that in movies nowadays: not just the strong woman, not just the strong man, but strong teams. Unlikely friendships. I like seeing that on screen. I wouldn't have placed Jack Black as Bowser until he started singing. I sat there going "yeah, yeah that's him." I also like that Chris Pratt has continued to do some more voice-over work and you can kinda tell he enjoys it in his characters. Over all this was enjoyable, the stakes were high for everyone, except for Toad: Toad just

Barbie

How cute! What a cute movie! I mean, Margot Robbie was not over-the-top  with her character. She was a real person, she had feelings, she knew what she wanted and she cared. How fantastic! And Ryan Gosling's Ken was just a true trip. He was so lost in Barbie that later in the real world he just - wow! I do like Barbie's other Barbie friends and Allan was a true treat. He wasn't taking over the screen but he was a true friend! Will Ferrell wasn't over-the-top funny, but he had his own message in this film. Barbie didn't take things away from those of us who grew up loving the doll as she was: she recognized she was needed and maybe more Barbie's are needed in the world.
