Minions: The Rise of Gru

What an interesting background story. Let me first say, I will be watching this with my friend, Christina, as soon as the curse of the money suck has ended and we can spend quality time together. But my husband and I had to see this to cheer things up a bit. The back story of Gru is interesting. The Vicious 6 were actually pretty cool. Love that Taraji is doing more voice over gigs. Steve Carell is still excellent as Gru. Who'd thought Jean-Claude Van Damme....wow. and wow. The story moves with Gru's ambitions and how he is treated in school. And he finds an unlikely friend outside of school and in his search for glory. But my favorite is Michelle Yeoh. Totally, totally, TOTALLY love Master Chow! The Minons themselves are sounding more like Spanish/Latin based in speech to me. Overall, I liked it. And I know Christina will too!

Dear Evan Hansen

What a new concept for a story. And I'm so glad someone, somewhere, came up with a new story line. A boy, depressed, feels like he's not seen, likes a girl, tries to have a friend in a "Family friend", has a brief encounter with a boy in school, and because of him, Evan's life is turned around. It's horrible that a death has to change the lives of so many, but it happened. And this story is really Evan's, but on the surface, it's Connor's life. And lots of music. Well done to all the actors in this production, and the music that they delighted the audience with. I wanted to cry, I really did, but I never did. From the start to the end, I never did cry. Maybe because the cast told this story so well. But the meaning is clear: we really aren't alone. Our situation is bad, there are others who are just as bad if not worse, and need someone to tell it to.

Lightyear

Well, it was definitely a Pixar movie. A lot, if not all, of Buzz' dialogue and catch-phrases from "Toy Story" are in this. Noted the commander with a wife and a child and then later a grandchild. Socks is, by far, my favorite character. Very independent but with a heart of gold. The young crew with Buzz have distinct characteristics and I enjoyed seeing them learn that they need each other. It's a hard lesson to learn, but yeah - success comes when you work together. But time lost, time changes, and then beating yourself up because of things you can't change. That's hard. Man, that's hard. Lessons all around in this movie. And it didn't seem very long, either. I enjoyed this very, very much.
